From Performance to Purpose: The Steel Sensation Story
Founded in 1996 by Trinidadian-born drummer Ian Japsi, Steel Sensation Steel Band has become a staple in the New York City Caribbean music scene. Known for its electrifying live performances and commitment to preserving the cultural legacy of Trinidad and Tobago’s steelpan music, the band has performed for major corporate events, private functions, and national TV appearances.
In 2024, responding to a rising demand for steelpan instruction and interest in high-profile cultural events like New York Panorama, Ian partnered with his sons Tristan and Christan Japsi to create a nonprofit extension of the band—Steel Sensation Steel Orchestra Corporation.
This 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization was founded to provide structured steelpan music education, youth development programs, and cultural outreach, particularly to underserved communities across New York City. Its mission is to use steelpan as a bridge to empower young people, preserve cultural heritage, and build community through music.
Program Highlights:
Under the direction of Tristan Japsi, Musical Arranger and Director, Steel Sensation Steel Orchestra Corporation will offer:
- Steelpan classes for youth ages 8 and up – Beginner to advanced instruction in a supportive group setting
- Introductory participation for ages 5–7 – Children may attend rehearsals with a parent or guardian present
- Local and regional travel opportunities – Perform in cultural showcases, parades, and steelpan competitions
- Participation in major events – Including the New York Panorama and other high-profile Caribbean music festivals
- Focus on personal growth – Programs promote discipline, confidence, teamwork, and cultural pride.

Our Programs
At Steel Sensation Steel Orchestra Corporation, we offer more than music instruction—we provide a platform for youth and community members to connect, grow, and celebrate the rich legacy of Trinidad and Tobago’s national instrument, the steelpan. From beginners to seasoned players, our programs are inclusive, empowering, and deeply rooted in Caribbean culture.
Youth Steelpan Classes (Ages 8+)
Designed for students ages 8 and up, our group steelpan classes teach rhythm, technique, musical literacy, and ensemble performance. No prior experience is needed, and instruments are provided during all sessions. Classes are guided by experienced instructors in a structured, supportive environment that builds self-discipline, confidence, and teamwork.
Ages 5–7:
We offer introductory sessions for our youngest musicians with a parent or guardian present during practice to ensure a safe and encouraging learning space.
Adult, Family and Seniors Steelpan Classes
Steelpan is for everyone. Our adult, family, and seniors programs offer a fun, collaborative space to learn or reconnect with Caribbean rhythms. Whether you're a first-time learner, returning musician, or family looking for a shared cultural experience, these classes are a great way to grow together.
School Partnerships & Cultural Outreach
We collaborate with schools, after-school programs, and cultural centers across New York City to bring the steelpan directly into classrooms and community spaces. Programs can include:
- In-school and after-school residencies
- One-day workshops and artist visits
- Interactive presentations on Caribbean music and steelpan history
Performance Opportunities
All program participants—youth and adults—are invited to perform throughout the year at:
- Local concerts and cultural showcases
- Citywide festivals and Caribbean competitions
- Community-centered events and school programs
These experiences build public speaking, confidence, and cultural appreciation.
New York Panorama Participation
Each summer, our nonprofit prepares for the New York Panorama, one of the most celebrated steelband competitions in the U.S. Participants of all skill levels can train with our full orchestra, led by Musical Arranger and Director Tristan Japsi, and perform live in this major cultural event.
